Herpes & Genital Warts..How Serious are they?

:( A couple of weeks ago I noticed what I suspected was a small genital wart on the shaft of my penis.

I'd never had an STD before, and this really shocked me, because it happened despite the fact that I had always used condoms. Apparently, you can get both genital warts and herpes quite easily despite covering up, because the virus that causes both can transfer skin to skin.

And there's some kind of huge statistic, like 50% of the people who have ever had more than 2 or 3 sexual partners in their lives have some form of active or inactive genital warts. It's quite troubling.

Also, because I had been seeing one particular SP on a regular basis. And because most genital warts appear from 1-3 months after contact, I expect that it probably was passed along to me from her even though she had no detectable symtomns herself.

Checking in at my local clinic, a doctor zapped it quite readily with a little bit of liquid nitrogen, and within 7 days all traces of it were gone.

After looking up as much as I could online on the topic, I'm still not quite sure how serious these warts are. A consensus of material that I had seen seemed to indicate that possibly 90% of genital wart issues are strictly cosmetic, though women should get regular pap smears; and that there are generally no serious side effects, and the warts themselves will often disappear on their own without treatment, but herpes is another ballgame altogether.

How serious to health are genital warts and herpes?
Can they be substantially prevented by showering immediately after sexual contact?

Also if the pooner limits their activity to covered BJ's and massage are they substantially safer?

Well....

Hugh,

I don't mean to make light of this, seeing as that you seem concerned about it, but by contracting herpes and genital warts you've basically caught up with the rest of the sexually active world.

Both ailments are so common that I wouldn't even worry about it if I were you. You can get the warts cryogenically removed (basically, frozen off).

I don't think showering is going to help.

I'd relax and not worry about it. Besides, what's done is done. And yes, if/when you get into a committed relationship and have unprotected sex, you partner should have Pap smears...which she should be doing anyway.

Yes, the SP and I have discussed it.

It's partially upsetting because both of us felt that by carefully using condoms we had been exercising proper precautions, and that condoms just will not protect you against everything that's out there.

Also, it puts a dent in our own relationship; if you can call play-for-pay (on my end) with one regular partner a "relationship."

Of course, by virtual definition, as a popular SP she has intimate contact with a parade of different and repeat clients all of the time. And from an STD perspective, the possibility of both contracting and spreading therefore become exponential.

And there are a number of STD's that show few if any symtomns for a long time. :(

Herpes and genital warts are both viral infections and the most common sexually transmitted infections (STI) out there.

We find that there can be confusion to both, I don’t think the names help we refer to one as HSV (Herpes Simplex Virus) and the other as HPV (Human Papilloma Virus).

To avoid any confusion between the two we will start new posts one dealing with herpes and one dealing with genital warts.

I'd appreciate that, and I'm sure many others will too. According to the survey results on stdresource.com, genital warts are perhaps the most misunderstood AND most prevalent STD out there. And there's no way to screen for the non-visual presence of them.

Thank you again,

Hugh

Hugh,

I'm sorry to hear about your incident. I hope it's nothing as serious as HIV. At the same time though thanks for sharing your experience with everyone. Despite the risks involved and the fair odds of getting sick, not many people share their negative experiences. Its interesting that many people don't really think about the risks involved. We usually either deny it or put it somewhere in the back of our minds and say, "it won't happen to me." I have done the same many times over and over. The truth is that this is risky business for pooners and for SPs. It can cost one a career, relationship or one's life.

Take care.

Even after reading whatever I could immediately find online, I'm still left with more questions than answers on this issue. I'm really looking forward to some non-judgemental advice from the health nurse(s).

Meanwhile, if one uses the most common basic stat, that about 50% of the folks who have had more than 3 sexual partners in their lifetime will manifest or re-transmit genital warts (and a smaller % herpes), then we're looking at a nearly 100% probability that full service sex trade workers have got it and will knowingly or unknowingly transmit it to their customers.

  Please don't misunderstand me, I'm not here to moralize. I'm just trying to figure out how or if my future pooning health risks can be minimized.

Warts & herpes: Add one more to the list

Oh great!
Just perusing the STD resource site again I noticed this :

http://www.stdresource.com/staying_safe/s1c.php

"...You can have an STD but show no symptoms. Syphilis, herpes and human papillomavirus (genital warts) can be passed on even if you are using a condom through skin to skin contact...."

Add SYPHILLIS to the list!!!! Yikes !!!

H.

There is no evidence to suggest that showering immediately after sexual contact would reduce the risk of genital warts.

Also if the pooner limits their activity to covered BJ`s and massage are they substantially safer?

If you limited your activity to covered BJ’s and massage you would reduce your risk to genital warts.

We have made a new thread to discuss genital warts (HPV)
