I frequent a cafe where one of the workers has developed the biggest herpes lip sores I've ever seen. She handles food and beverages. It is only human nature to occassionally touch a sore spot and was wondering what the risks are if she touches her lips and then touches food, cutlery or coffee cups/lids? I was suprprised her boss didn't tell her to stay home for a few days as they are quiet awful looking and probably are driving away business.

That's Herpes Simplex B - 99% of people have that at one time or another - if you don't kiss her you should be fine...

The percentage is lower but still high.

Don't kiss her, avoid using the same towel as her, and avoid sharing utensils that as touched her mouth.

There is NO virus named Herpes Simplex B.
What you are referring to is Herpes Simplex I {also commonly called "Cold sores", usually occurs on lips, but can affect any part of the body--even genitalia} and many people do get it.

The true genital Herpes is HERPES SIMPLEX II

So my question still lingers...is there a risk to customers from her touching her lips and then possibly handling beverages/lids/containers and/or food? Hvw to admit I've stopped going there for the time being.

GEOPHIL - OK Herpes Simplex I it is - simple cold sores - not a problem and we've all had them. And you'd be surprised how many people have Genital Herpes and don't know it.

COCKTHROPPLED - As for touching the sores then coffee containers - some risk but still pretty small.

If you're THAT concerned call the City Health Department and they are obliged (albeit slow) to investigate.
