World AIDS day just past so I've decided to post a different sort of review.

For my STD tests I usually hit my local clinic. Usually I had a wait and the service was average, but it was close to home so that's where I went.

I've heard great things about the STD Centre downtown. Was it worth the trip? Time to TOFTT.

I made an appointment. The phone girl was professional and didn't flirt at all. My appointment was 3 days in later. When I got there all the parking was all metered :( . There are two entrances. One from inside the old General Hospital (which has multiple entrances) and one from the car port on 111th St.

I checked in and was asked to fill out a form, and took my seat in the waiting area. I played the guessing game "Supportive boyfriend or pimp" with one couple (if he was a boyfriend she should run from that control freak) and one lady looked liked she didn't care if she was alive or dead, but the rest of the people looked like normal average people.

I was called in and followed my medical professional to her room. She asked me on the normal STD questions. She didn't bat an eye when I explained my sexual practices, her only comment was "That is quite a few partners for one year". I never felt judged or looked down on. Since I asked for a comprehensive test I had lots to do. I was asked for a urine sample (had to leave the room for the bathroom). She took some blood. I then had an physical exam of my genital area and had a foam tipped metal rod up my urethra (the only uncomfortable part). I got my pants back on, we chatted for a bit, I got some free condoms (vanilla, strawberry, and unflavoured) and dental dams (grape and banana) and was told I could pick up my results in a week. An appointment isn't needed to get the results.

A week later, a different medical professional, with the same professional attitude of the first (but a more bubbly personality) told me I was free and clear, but to come back in 6 months for another blood test.

Looks - 5 - the place needs a make over. Very drab.
Attitude - 9 - 8 for the first medical professional, and 10 for the second. I was never uncomfortable
Service - 10 - best clinic I've been to. They know their area of speciality very well.

Good question.

I didn't ask to be anonymous. I was asked for my Alberta health care number, name, age, and address, but I have a file number which I used to get my results.

Maybe they would have done it anonymously, I just never asked. It does say on their WWW page "provides free confidential assessment". Nothing about confidential meaning anonymous.

I've been tested at the STD clinic in the Edmonton General. The nurse was this older British woman with pursed lips, and I felt her judgemental eye burning through me. I mentioned that I had several partners, but did not mention that almost all of them were SPs. Thank God, because I received a scolding for my promiscuity - who knows what she would have said or done if I mentioned that I was a pooner. Well, if I have to go through all that shit all the time then I'd rather not go for tests anymore.

Visiting the STD Clinic in the Edmonton General ...

can be an embarassing moment. When I was first asked how many Partners I have had in the past six months and how many were SP's, I simply pretended that I could not count. I mumbled something like several, look closely at my shoes, stated they were all SP's and hope the inteview would end soon.

None the less, the peace of mind that you have one week later to know that you have not caught something and your SP Partners are safe from ta least you for now, is very reassuring. The real embarassment would be trying to contact all the SP's I have seen in the past six months. Many are my friends. I would not know where to start and who I contacted something from. It would be awfull.

My 2 cents ... T

I think its a British thing. I was in hosp once in 60s. there was a british exchange nurse and she was the only one that made a morphine shot hurt worse than the surgery. I think she would hit nerve centres on purpose, while the whole time telling everyone how she hated Canada.

I think it's a recent Alberta thing. Medical professionals here seem to be spending more and more time lecturing about smoking, drinking, eating, exercise, safe sex and other shit I already know than doing actual check-up stuff. I go to the dentist and the hygienist gives me grief for not flossing.

I recently went to see new G.P. for a routine check up and physical. Because I had never seen him before I had to go for a introductory session before the actual check up. He asked the usual family history and life style questions and when I mentioned that I was single he said he would get me tested for std's and hiv. Later when we were chatting I asked if this was standard practice and he said for him it was. His idea is that if he brings it up most guys will go sure, I'm here, why not and your going to the lab anyway. He said that he has found that many people are uncomfortable bringing up the subject and this way it gets done with the minium of discomfort.
Any way, I found that was a very easy way to go without any guilt or questions about my sexual partners.
Went to the lab, a week later went for the actual physical and got my results. Good to go.
While the number of sp's that I see is pretty limited and most of my visits are with my fav. I find it comforting that I haven't picked up any thing and more importantly haven't passed any thing on.
Like Trawler I would feel like shit if I had to phone any of the girls and tell them the news.

it's funny that a Q-tip in my dink makes my eyes water.

That kind of attitude from a so-called health care professional makes me simply furious  - what right does she have to scold you - and what does it accomplish? In this case, the nurse provided insensitive and unprofessional care and perhaps needs to consider how her misconceptions are negatively impacting her patients. OK that's my .02 worth.

For someone who is a "pro" but not a professional what would you pretend to think (or even know) about being a professional? Until you have legitimate
credentials your opinion is just that- AN OPINION!!!
I believe Gigi is pursuing studies in the healthcare field. She is entitled to an opinion same as everybody else who posts here as long as she expresses it in a respectful fashion.

Well I agree with Rafterman. GiGi’s comments are perfectly acceptable. A health care professional working in a STD clinic is not there to provide judgement’s on behavior. If the nurse feels that is required then she should be looking for a different location to practice her nursing. The result of that behavior is to affect Wolvie’s attitude such that he might not return. That is an unacceptable result.

Bobski’s remarks to GiGi seem to me to be unacceptable. This is a forum to exchange information and opinions. This particular thread started as a review of the clinic. As such it is comprised of opinions.
