Well you can get the hack for Dishnetw*rk.......it's been out for over a month now, (no hack for B*V yet thou). With Dish, you get all the FOX channels.....if you must get all the sports package for the US, then you will need to look up the Buy and Sell, and share a DTV (Direct Television) sub.

Cheers

Anyone have problems with reception on Sportsnet Ontario (channel 83) and Sportsnet East (channel 84) on SHAW?

All I get is a chopped digital feed with no sound.

Sports Channels

I may get some flak for this but,

BellExpressVu

4 sportsnet channel (Pacific, West, etc)
TSN
Score
All the US networks
time zone programming (get NBC from East Coast, Midwest, Pacific)

plus you can buy the Centre Ice hockey package and get over 1000 hockey games. Very useful if your favorite team is not local.

There is a variety of packages you can get from Future Shop or Radio Shack or the like, pick up a flyer and look it over.

About $99.00 installed and then $65.00/month would include a full range of channels including sports and movies.

Shak,

You won't get ANY american channels on BEV, you will need to get DTV or Dish, but you can't really subscribe b/c you're in Canada (there are ways thou in Canada)....one way you can get it legit here in Canada is to have someone in the US to sub, and activate an "extra" reciever for you and you can share the bill with your friend.

The downfall.

Both you and your friend must want the same programs, cause just like BEV, you pay for what you want. ie. if your american friend hates hockey...and you want the NHL package, how are you going to split the cost of the package, when one person doesn't want it.

Your friend must trust you with his life....cause if you decide to order a lot of pay per view movies....the bill is going to rack up pretty high......and it will be on your "american" friend bill, not yours....cause you don't have a bill

I followed your advise and picked up a copy of buy and sell, there are lotz ads on sat tv, installation included. I dont really know all the technical jargon. Basically i saw 3 types

Free To Air
Dishnet
Bell Express

Which one of those should I get? Also, you mentioned about hacked sat tv, how do they work. Sorry if I sound annouying but i am a complete dummy in the field.....

Free to air is just want it means....there are channels that are free for anyone with the receiver (like PBS for Kids).....but there are special FTA (free to air) IRD (receiver) that if you program it, it will allow you to watch more that what is suppose to be free......currently only Dish is available.

While BEV and DISH uses the same equipment, there is no public hack for BEV…..it’s just a matter of time.

DTV, there is no hack for DTV period. DTV switch there cards close to 2 years now, and no one has figure out how to hack it.

FTA receiver….the guide doesn’t work…so you can’t hit a button and see what’s on…you will need to surf the internet to see the program guide….the advantage of a FTA IRD is that it less likely to be hit with an ECM (Electronic counter measure)…or in English, the satellite company sends down a “virus” to fry your illegal IRD.

How do they work :)

Well each one work a little different.

FTA you must plug in a serial cable from your computer to the IRD and program it.....if you screw up, you will need to send the IRD to someone who knows how to repair it, otherwise you just made one heavy (an exspensive) paper weight.

Dish/BEV IRD....you can either use "plastic" which is the original card...and program the card to "open" up all the channels....or b) buy a special board, and program the board to open up the channel. The Atmega 128 board is still in the "fancy" stage....meaning the program is not out to the public yet, but rumors has it, it does work. The other board is the "syndrome".

The hack for Dish overall is still in the fancy stage....meaning that the hack can be gone tomorrow, leaving you will a whole bunch of useless equipment.
The people in the Buy and Sell will say anything...they will say that the hack is here forever...blah, blah, blah......well, they also said that the hack for DTV is around the corner too.....therefore, before you start, treat this as a gamble.....and gamble only what you are willing to loose.

This is a hobby that will probably cost more to do, than to subscribe….if you love computers, and electronics…you will love the hobby, you will be reprogramming your board, and/or reprogramming your receiver.….but if you’re in for “free tv” be prepare to find out that free tv comes with a heavy price tag due to the fact that you will send your item out each time you need to get it reprogram, and this is how the dealers make their living.

Cheers

Shak,

there are a lot of american channels on BEV. Fox, WTBS, KTLA, TBS, ESPN, Showcase, lots. It depends on what package you want. @ $30/month, not many of the above, @ $60/month almost all the above. Here is a link

http://www.bell.ca/shop/PrsShpTvChl_Landing.page

I have had BEV for 8 years now, dependable, moved a couple of times and they gave me a new dish each time (installation charge only). It is a pretty simple operation once you get into it. I think there is a special on right now where you get up to 4 recievers for $99.00 (I think there is a 2 year commitment). I've been pretty happy over the years with BEV.

Assuming you are not into hacking into the DTV or other options and dealing with that hassle, you should look at the options available retail. You could buy used but it is really worth the risk?

Go to the mall, stop in at a couple of shops that sell systems, ask questions, go look at websites and you should come up with an answer that works for you.

Sorry for reviving this old thread, but I just got an idea.

Is it possible that I can drive down to Seattle and open an account with the SAT TV down in seattle, bring the dish back and watch it in Vancouver?

I do have a US mailing address(I used it for internet shopping to cut down tarrif). Will this work?
