As you have probably guessed, I am now working full time.

My job basically consists of going door to door, sponsering children with in 3rd world countries.... let me tell you a little bit about it.

So I see this add in the paper.
"Live like a president! Travel, have fun, be lazy, make money! Must enjoy loud music. 18+"

Ok, lets see... Call the number.
Job interview.
YOU ARE HIRED!

What am I doing? Door to door, canvassing, bothering people in their homes. But it's for a good cause!
you know the commercials, save a child for a dollar a day. It's fun, but it is demanding. Long days, and you have to enjoy dealing with people and having doors shut and everyone says NO NO NO NO.
Nobody can afford it. They donate to other charities. They prefer to save kids in Canada.

One of our reps had someone sponser a child, they called it in to verify the information and found out that the child had already died. They died in their hands. Waiting for someone to find it convienient to drop a couple drinks, pack of smokes, or fast food each week. Waiting to find someone who gave a damn. They died waiting for someone to rescue them just because they were born in a shit life with no choices.

It kinda makes me feel bad, but I'm trying. I'm saving the world one life at a time.

Did you know that every year, 6 million kids under the age of 5 DIE because they don't get enough food?
Every 3 seconds, a child dies somewhere in the world.

Every 3 seconds, that's kind of frequent isn't it?

2.2 million kids die each year (that's twice the population of calgary) because of simple things they don't get, like those booster shots every 5 year old dreads. The flu shots, menengitis, hepatitis, all the ones we get handed to us on a silver platter before we get out of school.

There's so many things we take advantage of, and it's ignorance that is killing the world.
The first world countries play such a major part in tearing this earth apart, and we have the power to stop it.
Every person can help... I sponsered my first child last week. I'm a student, I work hard for my money, I don't have 2 cars in the driveway of my 4 bedroom house, but I can't wait to save the life of someone else in the near future...
You can do it too. It's so easy. So simple. What's stopping you?

Well gentlemen, let me give you a little incentive. My job is fairly leniant, and I spend a lot of time alone in the "field" so I can get away fairly easily. SO here's the deal:

You want to get together with me? I'm make some room for you. In fact, I'll even drop my donation to 280 IF... you would sponser a child. If you want to sponser more than one, (set up the kids with a pen pal perhaps?) then we can make arrangements for lengthier time.

It's only 33$ a month... that's ~7.50$ a week. One pack of smokes, 2 drinks at the bar, a cup of coffee a day... would you really miss it?
With the sponsership you get to write letters to your child, and see first hand how you're saving a life. I don't see how anyone could say no to that, it's such a rewarding feeling... Everyone really can make a difference!
So that's the deal. You can meet with me, I'll save YOU and you save a child! Does that sound fair? If you think so, email me!
remember my email? [email protected] for those of you who've forgotten ;)

We'll have to meet mon-sat between 12 and 8pm, but you will walk a away with a smile and a child. And those of you who are intimidated by the family members response, you should realize that it really isn't something bad. How can a partner get mad that you're saving the world? I'm even GIVING you the first month for you sponsership!

I'll keep saving the world... those of you who want to help me, definately let me know! I hope you can all agree the globe urgently needs you. We all need eachother. Hope you don't think I'm corny ;)

Boy am I ever happy that I didn't take up this exact same offer to the fat dude who last year came to my door wanting me to sponsor a child. Just my luck I would sponsor a kid BEFORE an offer like this.

Oh, by the way, hate to pour water on your idea because it really is one hell of an offer but....you're putting your employer at huge risk because of this.

Claire,
I think your heart is in the right place and I mean that sincerely :)
But this type of ad is in the wrong place. Simply because of the scale of this organization. Now if it were a more personal situation, it would be different.
I would probably have done the same thing before thinking it all the way through...and then I would ask MOD to delete.
Just my thoughts??

All the best to you!

I'm feeling so...charitable

I think this is great. Too bad you don't have an incall location.
as to appropriateness... I think it is highly appropriate... although if they ever find out you could be in deep doo doo. I think you better keep this pretty quiet but I admire your initiative.

Claire,

I have to agree with RaeAnn and knightrb.

Your heart is in the right place. By your actions, you are fired up about helping the children. However, you have to be careful as a lot of times people do things impulsively without thinking even though their hearts are in the right place.

IMO, it is great and admirable what you're doing for the children.

Best of luck.

Something to Ponder?

therealrex said:
My only problem with these outfits is how much of my $33 ends up going to the kids $5 ?
I think about that too...and then...the word faith pops in to mind ;)
Most things today it seems are not concrete enough to know forsure. I don't bother with all these "fly by night charities" which there are MANY, ever since an abundance of lottery (VLT) funds became available. Many being numbered companies (Ralphs distant relatives?), which do receive their share. However, the aforementioned charity is 1) for little ones 2) well known 3) T.V. advertised 4) plus you have contact with whom you are sponsoring 5) Follow progress with family. I have heard of people actually travelling to visit their sponsored child as well.
Bottom line...I think "faith" has to drive us to do good things in a world filled with so much corruption.

The bottom of the page is interesting:

Given the comments to the effect that Claire`s new employer may not appreciate being promoted in this manner. I suggest we do not click on the link, but copy it and paste it into a new browser window. When administrators do statistical analysis on traffic, they log refering url`s. I don`t think Claire would like https://perb.cc to show up in there.

Other than that - I love your idea Claire. It shows a deep spirit on your part.

P.S.

The refered text says that only 8% is allocated to support services and fund raising

sorry for being terse

Hi, I am sorry I was terse, I just posted the link as an example of an organization which tells you how it spends your donation, since this was a fairly common concern.

As per my knowledge, the link has no relation to Claire. Any relation would be purely accidental.

gentlemen I appreciate your care and concern :)

I'm not worried about the wrong advertising however, I'm not working underneath any orginization directly.
There shouldn't be a problem but if there is, what can happen? They don't want me to work anymore?
That would be their loss ;) not mine. I'm doing this obviously not for money but for the way you feel at the end of the day when you've saved someones life.

At least, I hope there's no problems...

Anyhow, I have all the answers to your questions about the sponsership itself. financial, perks, etc, I'll give you the information that I know, at least.

Although I've decided not to go ahead full time because it's too hard on the schedule, working 11 hour days is for labourers not pretty girls! hee hee...

my birthday's coming up so I'm going to be a little busy in the near future, although I don't have any plans for that day. a surprise party would be nice! anyone wanna organize that? lol... I can bake my own cake. Marshmallows and chocolate chips, lots and lots of deep, dark, rich chocolate cake with fluffy white icing. Mmmm.

well, I'm gone for a few days this week, going to visit a friend for some fun, but I'm still kicking around ify ou want to say hello!

XOX thanks for your support
Claire :D

great post Claire

good work, its important to have interests we believe in. How do we save the world? Things are only becoming more desperate lately. Individually we have to take on some sort of responsibilty.

My addiction to corporate greed stands in the way.
I truly believe that natural resources; everything on this planet 'should' belong to the people equally, but that is communism. Every single person does deserve some land to live on, food to eat, fresh water, bottom line.

What am I doing?
Educating myself. Things just aren't adding up, gas prices are insane, quaterly profits for Exxon are an all time high, for example. Money is no longer about survival, it is about greed.

December 1st I am cutting the cable, I am disgusted & sick of the brain washing, especially at christmas. More time for reading, creativity, working out, volunteering, etc...(oh yeah, work!)

I challenge anyone reading this to do the same....I have told my family I am not doing christmas. No presents. Good food & cocktails, yes! Instead I am buying useful necessities for the homeless & needy in my area. Wool socks, gloves, toiletries/first aid supplies, blankets, yummy snacks, what we take for granted. OR sponsor a child as Claire has. I know perb members are very very generous, over $500 was donated to me to buy bikes for kids.

We can make a difference with some thought, one day at a time. thank you Claire :)

Its a good to remember those less fortunate... a couple of dollars can go a long way to a family who has come on bad times.

Most communities have programs that help our less fortunate neighbours, food banks and other organizations always need our support, even more so as the silly season approaches.

It's the close minded and ignorant who believe there is nothing they can do to help 'save the world'.

This Canadian fellow, Dave Pollard, has the right idea. We should listen to him and adopt at least one of his ideas as our own. If you aren't part of the solution, you are part of the problem.
