So, I have some time off coming and I am thinking of driving up to Edmonton to visit some friends I have not seen for a long time.
I want to keep the driving to a minimum, meaning quick.
So, what is the fastest way to drive there?

I am not flying, because then I can use my car there, and I may go down to Calgary on the way back.

Is it possible to do it in a day? I once drove from Vancouver to Sanfransico in a day.

Last time I went I took Vancouver, Coquihala, Kamloops, Edmonton. Took me 12 hours total with a 1 hour stop in Kamloops, so doable, with out excessive speeding.

The quickest way to drive between Vancouver and Edmonton is the Yellowhead via Kamloops, Valemount and Jasper. Unlike the Trans-Canada route through Calgary, there's less traffic, fewer uphill climbs, no tunnels and less treacherous (the Kicking Horse pass near Golden is a dangerous drive). That way, from city limit to city limit, is about 12 to 13 hours.

Driving to Edmonton

Freeway to Hope, then Coquihalla to Kamloops, then Yellowhead (Hwy 16) the rest of the way. Excellent road for the most part, even if it is only two-lane for a good chunk of the Yellowhead, but if you travel at off-peak times (night) all there is on the road is semis and the occasional wildlife.

One thing to watch for at night though is the lack of service stations between Kamloops and Hinton (Alberta). Both night trips got a little dicey when I passed on fueling up at Kamloops (heading east). One time had to wait until the stations opened in Valemount and two weeks ago had to go all the way from Clearwater to Blue River with the needle on E (at 3 am!).

One other thing: if you drive like me (waaaaay too fast) you can expect an average of 0.5 speeding tickets per trip. But each time the cops have given me a major break on the speed recorded and saved a few hundred in fines.

Like I said, it's a really nice drive, with great scenery, but best done before the snow flies.

I agree the best way is Valemount. Map programs will tell you Golden way is shorter, don't go that way ,roads suck, Watch for heat around hinton, and try hotel in little fort for lunch, watch your gas if nite, my bud from ed does it in 9 hrs,not many drive like him lol. If u want the senic route go up ,golden.ice fields, to road to rockey mountain house, for speed only go jasper route. I can't count how many times I've drove it.
