New electric car batteries
How long do they last?

What can charge them? ICE, wind, solar, what brands are out there for solar? etc

inverters that convert from solar to batteries. brand names etc.

Years ago in an tech magazine, the new design had the batteries as the floor, to make a roomier car./suv.

It sounds like the electric car batteries are lasting longer than expected. It seems they lose 10 or 20 percent over ten years then hold steady for a very long time after that. At some point they can be put to new use as stationary batteries for home backup power or for grid stabilization. Last I heard the Tesla battery packs are the best.

I have heard they are only expected to last for ten years. Don't think there is enough history to say they lose 10 to 20 percent in ten years and then hold steady for a very long time. I'm familiar with Lipo type batteries in other applications besides electric cars and they are not particularly long lasting, although depends how careful you are about charging them. They are also susceptible to catching on fire if improperly charged.

Toyota gives a 10 year non prorated warranty on their batteries so I would assume the batteries are easily lasting ten years. Also, not hearing anything about large groups of people having to replace batteries on their early model Prius and those would be about 20 years old. Many taxis running around with 500,000km + and again not hearing about issues with batteries.
In terms of charging, I have seen the self charging, the ones that plug into a regular 110v outlet, and those that need a special charging station installed.
As tech improves the batteries are getting smaller in size.
That's about all I know for batteries.

Masterblaster is concerned that the Lithium Polymer (LiPo) batteries don't last all that long and have melt down problems. This could be expected with LiPo batteries but I don't think LiPos are used in cars now. Cars use more stable Lithium Ion batteries. Some cars may use the Lithium Iron Phosphate batteries that are even more stable.

The LiPo batteries have the highest power to weight ratio of any battery. They are best for small but demanding applications like airplanes (model or full size), cell phones and model racing cars. They are very sensitive to current and temperature. I would not want to ride a big LiPo battery pack down the highway on a hot California day.

Are you planning a trip off grid?

Lots of options if you research it.
