For all you white wine connoisseurs could you please recommend me a bottle of Pinot... to give as a gift. I am looking in the $30 to $50 range. Thanks.

Whatever you do, stay away from the Italian Pinots, what we get over here is typically overproduced and lacking in concentration/complexity. The ones from Alsace are much better in general, Pfaffenheim and Dom Mure both have Grand Crus in your price range.

This is similar to what I was going to say (well, not as detailed because Brynn is a much better connoisseur than myself). Itailian Pinot Grigios tend to be overly sweet, some even taste like they're crossing into the Moscato range.

Willamette Valley Vineyards in Oregon has a great Pinot Gris (http://wvv.com). It's not overly dry but very clean and not at all sweet. It's also very versatile and my last batch went just as well with raw oysters as it did with an afternoon picnic. Don't let the price fool you - just means there's more to enjoy.

I like to support BC VQA wines if possible and have found Kettle Valley, Blue Mountain and a new one called Spierhead. They all make very nice Pinot Gris with Blue Mountain making an excellent Pinout Blanc.

While I agree in general about some Italian Pinot Gris being sweet, the Tommasi Pinot Grigio is citrusy which pairs very well with fish.

All of these wines are sub $22 but given some of the awards some have won, price is not a great indicator of the quality of the wine.

Since it's a gift and Brynn offered her ideas, you should find a nice gift from those regions mentioned :)

James Oatley Tic Tok Pinot Grigio 2012. From Australia. Give the 2010 if you want to look really sophisticated. Drinks like made by elves who can only have one wine to drink forever. I typically only like reds but this one is magic for a summer treat.

Will add that this one from California, albeit more expensive, is a decent second place. 2006 J Russian River Valley.

Try Burrowing Owl Pinot Gris, a local winery out of Oliver
shhh, I was keeping that one to myself ;)

I do get quarterly shipments from Burrowing Owl. I will have to review it because some of their prices have been steadily creeping up whereas many of the smaller wineries are staying within my wine budget. I am speaking specifically about the Pinot Noir and Syrah from Burrowing Owl. Their white wines are still competitive.
