About Pivot Legal Society:
Pivot Legal Society is a non-profit organization dedicated to improving the lives and advancing the interests of marginalized persons through law reform, legal education and strategic legal action. Pivot Legal Society is run off the energy and initiative of dedicated volunteers consisting of community members, activists, students and professionals.
Sex Work Law Reform Project Overview:
In the first phase of its Sex Work Law Reform Project, Pivot Legal Society completed a constitutional analysis of the criminal laws relating to adult sex work. The final report produced during the first phase, entitled Voices for Dignity, argued that the current criminal laws are unconstitutional and recommended the repeal of ss. 210, 211, parts of 212, and 213 of the Criminal Code of Canada.
In the second phase of Pivot’s Sex Work Law Reform project, Pivot will address two important questions. First, what form of regulation, if any, should replace the criminal laws relating to prostitution? Second, how will the various areas of the law affect the rights and interests of sex workers working in a decriminalized environment?
Pivot will examine the existing municipal, provincial and federal legislation that is relevant to decriminalized sex work by conducting discussion groups with sex workers from various areas of the industry and by conducting a review of the relevant law. The overall objective of this project is to examine the effect of Canada’s existing laws on sex work and to evaluate whether the laws facilitate working and living conditions consistent with the rights, needs and interests of sex workers. The result will be a report containing an analysis of the legislation and a set of recommendations on law reform that will be provided to all levels of government
About the Discussion Groups:
Each discussion group participant will take part in a facilitated discussion group containing 6 participants and a pair of 2 co-facilitators that will last 2 hours with a half hour lunch break. Lunch will be provided.
Participants will sign a consent to participate form and all persons involved in the discussion groups including facilitators and organizers will sign confidentiality forms ensuring the utmost protection of the confidentiality for participants.
Pivot Legal Society is under an undertaking to ensure that the discussion group is kept in utmost confidence.
Participants will be paid a $25 honorarium for each 2 hours of their time.
