these are researchers i know really well and some of whom are former sex workers!!! their ethics and methods are rock solid. complete confidentiality. they are based out of UBC with a grant from CIHR- canadian institute for health research.

re: honorarium

i always suggest people take the honorarium. it sets a precedent that our experiences are valid and that we have the expertise to lead any changes that may come. it means our knowledge is valuable.

and of course researchers make money why doing research so why wouldn't we?

it is completely your choice however if you take the honorarium.

here's a second bit of info they sent....

Who we are
We are a team of university-based researchers with backgrounds in community service among sex workers, who use a harm reduction approach to study the health and safety of sex workers of all genders who are currently working in the Vancouver sex industry. Our study is funded by the Canadian Institutes of Health Research.

The Study
We are conducting research with people of all genders who are involved in the off-street sex industry in Vancouver to increase our collective knowledge about how the physical, organizational and managerial contexts of the off-street work environment interact to affect the health and safety of sex workers in Vancouver. We hope to develop knowledge that allows proponents of harm reduction to make recommendations for addressing self-governance and informing public health interventions dedicated to improving the health and safety of sex industry workers.

We need your help
If you are an off-street sex worker of any gender, a person who purchases sexual services, a sex venue manager, driver, booking personnel, etc. in Vancouver, we would like to speak with you in a tape recorded one-on-one interview lasting between 30 and 60 minutes. Confidentiality is guaranteed; all identifying information will be removed from the interview transcript and you will never be linked to the information you share. The interview is completely voluntary; it is okay if you don’t want to answer some of the questions. An honorarium is included.

Study Results
The main study findings will be published in academic journal articles and will also be available in a report presented at a community forum. Copies of the report will also be made available at community organizations that provide services to sex workers in the Lower Mainland.

bump!!!! i just want to encourage people who may be new to perb and not know about this project, to take part. if you buy sex or sell it or are a manager of an adult industry business, please add your voice to this important work.

the recent release of a report in newfoundland has made it even more clear to me that we need to be prepared to fight when the laws come down and to be armed with ethical research that truely reflects our lives. not research based on youth exploitation as the norm in our industry and which spoke to exactly zero sex workers.

so, it may be a bit of time out of your day, but its important. so please take part in this study,

susie

I participated in an interview last week. It was very easy to set up an interview date, time, and location. Everything was arranged by email.

The interviewer I spoke with was a very friendly, respectful woman. It was a great experience, and I encourage everyone who is eligible to participate. :)

Thanks to Susi for posting this information on PERB, and thanks to the researchers for their hard work on this project.

here's an update from SPACES.....

SPACES (Sex, Power, Agency, Consent, Environment & Safety) is proud to announce that we have had fantastic feedback from female providers. You are a very insightful and resourceful segment of the sex working population and we would like to thank you for and acknowledge your contributions to this research project.

As of February 1st 2014 SPACES is transitioning to the final phase of data collection where we would like to hear from providers who identify as male. We are making this shift because we are examining how gender may relate to health and safety practices. Providers who identify as female may still contact us after February 1st. The voices of women providers will always be included and respected!

Just as before we would love to chat with buyers, managers and support staff (security, drivers and booking personnel) of all genders.

If you have already been interviewed and you know of anyone who fits these categories, please get in contact with us. You can accompany the interview and an honorarium will be provided to you and to the person who you refer. If you are new to the study and curious about participating, please feel free to contact us. We would be happy to answer any of your questions.

After this last stage of interviewing, we plan to reconnect with interested research participants and begin sharing preliminary findings to hear what you all think of what we found and to collectively decide upon next steps.

Interviews may last between 30 and 60 minutes. Audio files will be transcribed and then destroyed. A small stipend of $25 will be provided to participants.

Please keep your eye on our blog going forward and as always contact us with any questions, comments or concerns.

The SPACES study is in its final stages of data collection. We would like to thank all of the buyers and providers who have contributed. If you are a buyer, manager or support person (security, driver, booking staff) of any gender who has yet to have an interview, please contact us before April 30th 2014.

We are using the term “Manager” loosely. We want to interview traditional agency owners, Madams, venue supervisors, PI’s or pimps AND those who may, informally, rent out a room in their apartment to a friend to turn a date in more informal ways.

As for buyers, it doesn’t matter how often you buy or how long you’ve been enjoying it, we would love to hear about your experiences, what your advice would be to new buyers and your wisdom and best practices—what are the things about buying that you’ve learned by doing!
