Can someone who has been tested in the Vancouver area please describe what happens when one gets tested for STDs at a CDC clinic.

- is it anonymous or do they need your BC Health card
- is it only a blood test or a physical exam as well
- how long does it take
- how soon do you get results and how are the results communicated to you.
- are they snoopy about your sexual encounters
- cost if any

I just had my tests done 10 days agao.

1)No health card, no ID. They identify you by the name you give them. Remember this name and it's spelling.
2)They blood test and give you the STD test. The STD test is now back to one surgical swab put into the end of your wiener. It use to be two swabs so be thankful that it's only 1. It definitely feels "interesting" but it's not even close to the end of the world. They also take a urine sample. Don't urinate 4hrs before the test (follow their directions as I may be wrong).
3)You call a special telephone number in about 1 week from the test. They ask your name (you remembered your name and it's spelling right) and they tell you over the phone if you are positive or negative for chlamydia, gonorrhea, syphillis and NGU.
4)They ask you if you have had sex with sex trade workers or intravenous drug users. They do ask a bit about your sexual history. They don't give a rats ass about the morality, they want to know in order to stop disease. Tell them the truth.
5)Cost is ZERO.

6)The clinic off of Cambie St by VGH is busy, I rolled the dice and was lucky enough to get a drop in exam early on Saturday morning. Other than that it was going to be close to two weeks for an appointment.

7)The Public Health Nurse was awesome. Not judgemental at all and very easy to talk with.

The BC Centre for Disease Control has a GREAT website. www.stdresource.com . Read it and learn.

I was sorta sweating buckets but got the news today that I was negative for any STD's. I feel mentally relieved and it has made me very much reexamine my actions.

Thanks for the info JC. Glad to hear that your tests returned negative.

I've been putting off getting tested for the longest time because I didn't know what to expect and also because I'm pretty sure I'm clean. However, if getting tested is essentially painless, might as well get it done for peace of mind.

Thanks again.

I also went to STD clinic at VGH last month for tests. I concur that the nurses are awesome there. Very friendly and professional. The hardest part for me was to wait for the results. If you are under any medication, let them know because it can skew the results. Good luck.

Gawd, that's a difference with the STD clinic here in Edmonton. I went there recently and the nurse kept giving me the pursed-lipped judgemental eye after I admitted having multiple partners (but didn't say most of these were SPs). After the tests were done, she preached down at me about abstaining until I find a long-term partner.

Last time I went they were breaking in a new urine test that in theory was better then the swab. Of course as it was new they messed it up. Twice. I got really good at pissing in a cup.

The only question about my sexual history I have ever been asked was if I had contact with my partner.

it does make one wonder why a judgemental bitch would be working in such a sensitive area ... i stopped talking to my doc about the same issues because he would preach a mouthful at me too...

thankfully the clinic here in vic is okay ... got a few frowns and back stiffening but no lectures or dirty looks ...

Exactly. It's bad enough that I get lectured about shit I already know from doctors (and I've noticed a dramatic increase in this since the government cutbacks). In a sensitive area like STDs, people are already nervous enough about going there for fears of being seen by those they know. Having some Dr. Laura clone stand there and cast her judgement upon you just makes things worse. If this preaching and moralizing were eliminated from these clinics, maybe...just maybe...more people would bother to get themselves tested for STDs. Save the lecturing for the high schools.

"After the tests were done, she preached down at me about abstaining until I find a long-term partner."

Depending on what she said, she may have breached the code of conduct for her profession and wolverine could be justified in filing a complaint to the nursing association in that province.

Wolverine - I am really sorry about your bad experience at Edmonton. Maybe you should drop by the STD clinic at the Vancouver General Hospital next time you are in town. :) You can really feel the nurses are there to listen and help you. Beside, this would be more discreet for you as well.

No worry guys, it's not like this nurse is going to have any profound effect on my life. Remember, unlike you godless heathens of Babylon on the west coast, I live in a conservative Bible-belt part of the country, so of course people here are more prone to inflicting their "family values" on others. Besides, I'm already too used to so-called medical professionals doing more preaching than practicing medicine. In the last 10 years, I think I've only encountered one doctor who actually conversed with me as an adult and not taken on a condescending schoolmarm stance. So that is what Ralph Klein's health care has really come to.

Besides, after the visit to the STD clinic, I was pooning that same evening! HA HA HA!!

Is there a place to get tested in Surrey/Langley area?

This thread is a bit old, but it wouldn't hurt to revive it. Is there an 'anonymous' place to get tested out in the Surrey langley area?

I concur, the nurses at VGH's Centre for Disease Control are superb. One detail you may want to know is that if you want a written copy of your results, you have to show ID at the time you register and give your real name. It says that somewhere on the form but I missed it first time around and they don't tell you that verbally.

The swab up the penile opening was a piece of cake (much better than my large fingered doctor going for the prostrate probe at my annual checkup).

The other benefit is, you get to stand on this little stool that puts your privates at mouth height to the seated nurse while she takes a good look (in my case, she was quite pretty -- a 7.5) . It sort of reminds me of when we used to play "doctor" as kids. I think that is the last time I didn't get an erection in this position.

I always wonder about people that have jobs like these ... how does the conversation go:

"Hi dear, how was your day?"

"Oh, pretty good, you know ... some large ones, some weenie little guys, one yelper and the usual guy that makes a crack about taking off the gloves and he'll give me a review on Perb."

They have a “finger-prick” rapid HIV test that has just been approved by Health Canada and hopefully it will be available in the next few months. You will still need to go to a clinic to get the rapid test, but will get the results immediately. Take a look at this web site:

http://www.biolytical.com/

There is a gonorrhea urine test available in BC at some private labs. Our lab does not have the ability to test urine for gonorrhea at this time. We hope with tech advances the urine test will be available to us.

It is not clear that the urine test is better than the swab. The problem with the swab is that many people find it uncomfortable and this is not an issue with urine testing. The advantage of the swab is that we can determine which antibiotics will work best in treating you.
