Any recommendation for a decent Japanese restaurant in Vancouver?

I tried Tojo's couple times and I have mixed experience with it. The first time I went there I ordered omakase which was a truly awesome experience! When I went there last month, the food did not live up to the fame of the restaurant. I ordered some kind of rolls, but the problem was the rice crumpled into pieces when I picked it up with the chopsticks. I was left feeling very disappointed because that is not supposed to happen in a top notch Japanese restaurant.

The one that I frequent the most is Aki (in a basement on Thurlow near McDonald's) and I find their food to be fairly consistent and inexpensive compare to Tojo's prices. I also visited Guu on Robson and Hapa, but didn't like their styles too much. Both of these restaurant put way too much 'special house sauce' in the sashimi which killed the flavour of the fish. I find their sashimi not to be in the freshest form either. One of my new favourite is the little sushi bar near the entrance of Sandbar. I love the texture of their sushi. The rice is soft on the outside and chewy inside, which reminds me the kind of sushi that I had in Japan. The only drawback of the restaurant was the limited selection in their menu.

Can someone suggests other Japanese restaurants that I should venture to try out their menu? I don't mind paying more as long as you get what you pay for. Thanks.

A few of the more expensive places that I've been to that I like are Kakeimon in Waterfront Centre, Masaki in the Pan Pacific Hotel and Koji on Hornby.

If you go to Masaki, you should try their lobster roll. It's usually not on the menu, but you can usually get it if you ask. It's a bit pricy, but delicious.

Stay away from Tanpopo on Denman Street. I found the quality of the food to be very low.

Wabi Sabi- 10th and Sasamat

This place is one of the best. The Chef is Japanese, the front of house manager is a Canadian woman who has lived in Japan and speaks Japanese. It is traditional Japanese food with a twist is Canadian expertese.

Highly recommended.

Try Kamei Royale at Burrard & Alberni. It is upstairs from the Luxe Boutique. Owned & staffed by all Japanese. Reasonably priced too.
You can go to the Pasta Garden side of the business and get the all you can eat. It is owned by Kamei, the food comes from the same kitchen, just that the waitresses are not Japanese.

Kamei would rather you not know this, but I know someone there who told me all of this.

I believe the restaurant is called Sakei not Aki or maybe it changed the name..., I have been going there for the last 12 to 13 years...., the owner is Japanese...and he is also a sushi chef...

It depends on if you want to order small dishes..., if you are interested in eating a lot of sashimi.., then go for the "all-you-can-eat" restaurants..., I have a few suggestions, first one is Ebi located at the Southwest corner of Granville St and 41st Ave.
second one is called "Top gun" sushi, located at the New Westminster Quay on top of a western restaurant. They have variaty of selections on raw seafoods (farm and wild salmons, geoduck, etc...), and the third one is Richmond Sushi, it is connected with Top Gun, very similar menu, but minus the geoduck sashimi...

I went to the Tsunami when I was in Vancouver. Not exactly the best I've ever had, but as a lone diner I appreciated the self-serve boats at the sushi bar.

Perhaps you are thinking of Sakae? It is below ground near on Thurlow across from the 7-11. It is down where the Keg USED to be before it moved ground level and across the street. Very good...a must visit.

I also enjoyed my one time visit to Musashi on Denman.

Also, a couple stores up from Musashi is Kintaro, a really good ramen place. I went there with a Japanese friend of mine last week and she loved it...and so did I. (=

There are actually two Japanese restaurant in the basement on Thurlow. One is Aki, which is closer to the stairs and across from the karaoke establishment. Another is further down the hallway, and all I remember is the name begins with "S". That one could be Sakae.

Thanks for all the input. :)
