Why would Microsoft use the English (as in British) spelling using "s" instead of the anticipated "z" (as in "realise" as compared to the usual "realize") in the recent email announcement on changes to the Microsoft Services Agreement??? As the ultimate American corporation, this puzzles me. Any insightful response might quell my curiosity.

Yo Missy:

Being a resident of Vancouver, we both have identical settings re Windows. Now, my question would be when did Canadian English use the "s" as opposed to the USA-linked "z"? (Fuck, coming from Oz, it has taken me many, many years to wean out the transfer from "s" to "z.".) I am still confused, but no sleep will be lost..

Where American and British spelling differs for some words, the Canadian spelling is sometimes identical to British spelling (e.g. colour vs. color, etc.) and sometimes identical to American spelling.

The correct Canadian spelling for the ise/ize words is the same as the American spelling (e.g. realize), but we call that letter "zed".

Other examples of our usage of American spelling that are also the Canadian spelling are "tire" vs. British "tyre" and "jail" vs. British "gaol". There are many others. There's no rule; you just have to know.
