OTTAWA - A recall has been issued for Tanimura & Antle brand romaine lettuce because of possible E. coli contamination.

The lettuce was imported from the United States and sold across most of Canada from August 8th to the 17th.

The recall affects packages bearing the U-P-C 0 27918 20314 9.

No reports of illness have been linked to the product, however, food contaminated with E. coli can cause serious and potentially life-threatening illnesses.

Symptoms include severe abdominal pain and bloody diarrhoea.

Canadian distributors are voluntarily recalling the lettuce and the Canadian Food Inspection Agency is monitoring the recall.

Never buy pre-packaged lettuce or salads ...

If you do a Google of pre-packaged lettuce and salad recalls, you will find that this has been going on for years and most likely will for years to come. I would NEVER ... EVER (Best Chris Jericho voice) buy the stuff.

What would you suggest for those who wish to obtain the health benefits of eating lettuce?
Or do you abstain from it completely? What other foods are at risk for e. coli?
