Rumour has it that the City closed Alycia's for back taxes. Please say it isn't so, this is probably my favourite restaurant on the planet! Can anyone in Winnipeg confirm or deny this?

I used to go there back when I lived in Winnipeg. For those who aren't familiar, Alycia's was a hole in the wall little restaurant in the notorious North end of Winnipeg. Some of the best holopchi and perogies that I ever had.

There was a rumor that John Candy would frequently have food from Alycia's sent to him in TO. Don't know if this was true or not. :)

It's true. Not only did he have food shipped to TO...... he also would book the place whenever he was in Winnipeg several times a year.....and have his extended family cousins, etc ( I think candys mom was from wpg) down for supper, 30 or 40 people.... He picked up the tab.
That guy was loved everywhere he went, and not cause he paid the tab, but because he was a genuine good person. A gentle giant....it was so sad when he died....

Silver surfer, there's another great place in transcona, winnipegs other north end....will look up the name and addy and pm you.

SCTV is still one of my favorite shows of all time. Think of all the movies/shows he could have made if he was still around. :)

Yup the place did had the late comedian John Candy ship perogies from Winnipeg to Toronto. The owners wanted to retire. It was in the Winnipeg Free Press.

Beverly Hills. In the Kitchen eatin' vittles.
Yes, it is gone. :(
I did some checking with a few friends as to why.
The owner's retired. They wanted to sell the business but hold on to the real estate which is really such a run down building no one in their right mind would lease it, let alone buy it without some major improvements. Also because it was a primarily "cash" business the books didn't show the type of revenue and retained earnings it should for the price they were asking. In the end a few people did look at buying the place but things didn't work out so I guess the owners decided they had made their money and rode off into the sunset.
As for the tax thing, they may have had some outstanding tax issues but that's not why it shut down.

Cheers
