Getting rid of odor - Ex roommate smoked meth in bathroom

So my roommate of six months moved out today. In the six months she was here she was a bit of a boozer but all in all wasn't much of a problem.

Now she moved out today and everything looked clean. However this afternoon I thought I'd do a once-over clean and as I was cleaning I noticed a sweet chemical smell in the bathroom that I didn't see in my quick previous looksy over with her. I am absolutely convinced she must have been smoking meth in the can and I didn't notice her doing it.

So my question...how the fuck do I get that smell out now. I've cleaned it over a couple times and the smell is entrenched. It's subtle at first...but its rancid once I've picked up on it.

OMG you poor thing, that is disastrous. Subtle-at-first-but-rancid-once-picked-up smells IN THE BATHROOM are absolutely horrible. I hate to say it but you're screwed, you're just going to have to move now.

lol

I don't even know what that is. Sweet, chemical smell? What does that mean and how does it lead one to being absolutely convinced she must have been smoking meth in the bathroom?

Entrenched in what? The air?
Open the window to air it out or turn the fan on, get an air freshener, incense or scented candles.

Are you serious? If so, three things:

1) Big surprise she's moving out after 6 months, you sound like a cool roomate and all - not the nosy, over zealous, paranoid type with an over active imagination at all.

2) You're a weirdo. (I mean that in the nicest way possible, of course. :))

3) Are you SERIOUS?

Well...as I mentioned, I've scrubbed the room about 15 times with lysol. Walls, floors, door, cabinets, sink. Used draino for the sink, toilet and shower. And it isn't going away. I've been around people who smoke the shit and it smells exactly like that. If you don't have any experience being around this shit for reference then you can't comment - its a smell like nothing else and its sickening (at least to those of us who can't use this stuff).

And no...I'm not nosy. I never went into her room or her bathroom. Her room has none of this odor. However I did notice yesterday as I helped her move some things that there was an ashtray in the bathroom.

And if you must know she was very friendly with me after 6 mths despite the fact that we didn't see each other more than once a week due to our schedules (she is a flight attendant)...close enough that I've spoken with her parents. In those conversations in the last few days I was told why she was moving out and closer to where she worked on the other side of the lower mainland...the biggest reason was to get away from all her childhood friends where she was caught up in an unhealthy lifestyle including drugs - something I knew nothing about from her and never came across. History of AA and the like

You would never know it might have been happening unless you went into her bathroom, which was her space and not mine. So no...I am not an over-zealous, paranoid type. I didn't know until I was cleaning the place out for my new roommate.

There is no mistaking the smell. If you haven't come across it you wouldn't know what I'm talking about.

Its not like she was an obviously cracked out meth head. She was a working professional who came home once a week - oftentimes a day I won't see her. I was aware that she'd go out with her friends partying when she was home but its not like I was waiting up at night to check up on her when she came home.

You used that much disinfectant and can still smell it. Amazing.

I have been known to smoke a cigar in my day. A lounge I used to visit used Ozone to neutralize the cigar smell and IMHO it was quite effective. I even bought a small portable one with a cigarette lighter charger to use in my car. Long trips smoking a Cuban are very pleasant and you wouldn't know I smoke cigars.

I don't know this company but they have a very interesting demo of their ozone generator. Bear in mind ozone is like bleaching the air you breathe. So using it when necessary is recommended.

Yeah, I'm amazed myself. I'm not sure if the residue I'm smelling is embedded in the drywall, or coming from the drains, or the vent exhaust. This could be a good idea if I could locate something like this - I know it does wonders for cleaning cars.

Not to add to your situation, but since she was an airline steward, you might want to get someone to come in and check her room, closet, dresser drawers (if room was semi furnished), the carpet (if applicable) around where bed headboard was, and behind plug covers....for bed bugs. She travelled alot, stayed in hotels where I'm sure air attendants from all over the world have stayed, and brought bed bugs with them, undoubtedly.

Since she's been living there for six months, more than ample time for bed bugs to get set in, breed, and infest. If there is a mattress or bed she slept on, have it treated first or wrap in plastic before you drag it through the hallways, as they do drop off....so take a flashlight, magnifying glass or other device and thoroughly inspect all areas occupied by your roomie. They are very small and flat when not feeding, and fat and red when they are.

while you're looking up Kilz on google, maybe take a moment and look up bedbugs as well. you will find there is a worlwide epidemic of them, and the conditions that myself described are precisely the kind of conditions that would make your ex-roomie a carrier. top marks for him pointing that out. you wouldn't want your new roomie moving in to a room that's infested, or worse yet, people not taking the room because they are more aware of the problem, and are looking for the little devils when they do their inspection, and don't rent the place as a result

Yeah...I think I'm just going to get a professional to come in and clean the place out then. I wouldn't have even considered this as an issue too.

What profession was she in exactly?

Too many people call themselves professionals, but I would say less than 5% of the working world = one...

Take out the fan and clean that as well, and while it is out, wipe down the opening, (if you haven't done this yet), also light covers etc. Smoke smell can be into the wood of cabinets, hinges etc. Cigarette smoke odour is the same, and often just takes time to disappear, nasty tho.

You can also try lighting incense. The smoke will go into all the places other smoke went into, and the scent can linger for a while in the same way.

Would you like coffee or tea? This is how you fasten your seat belt. Adjust your seat to the upright position. (Can't be that hard)
sorry, but showing up on time is a stretch for most crack users (and in the aircraft industry, planes do leave on time, sort of)! Also, I notice most flight attendants are now required to help out with customer check-in and boarding lounge desk duty. i don't know what your experience is with crack users, but mine says that not one of them could make it as a flight attendant

ms sarah, your article may work fine for alcohol and designer drugs, etc. but that's not what crack is, and i doubt very much that the writer of the article is taking about crack users

Crystal meth is a different drug than crack.

Not sure about meth smells, lol. But a few years ago I had an incident with spoiled milk and I could not get that damn smell out! Well a friend of mine worked in a theatre and said old costumes that they can't wash they spray with cheap vodka! I tried it, and sure enough it was the only thing that worked! (Mind you it smelt like a bad hangover for about an hr but after that the smell was totally gone!) lol. Good luck!!
