Are Vancouverites Unfriendly?

Heres something i heard that i find a little disheartening. I met in the last couple of days three different individuals who have moved or have stayed in Vancouver for at least 1 year who say Vancouverites are unfriendly.:( "NOT ALL," but a large portion.

I grew up in Vancouver so i'm a little biased. I don't think Vancouver is any worse than any other larger metroplis city.

For those that are new to Vancouver whether you come from another country or from other parts of Canada do you agree with this sentiment? --- Kev

I don't know about that, when ever I walk the streets often get invitations from young(er) girls to party with them :)

I find them friendlier than Londoners ( UK )for example. And certainly they rate higher than most american cities I've visited.
We are also friendlier than Hawaiians. They are a mean bunch.

Yes, Vancouver has a milder climate and nicer scenery than most anyplace else in Canada. Those are blessings. It is downright rude to use those blessings as an excuse to deride and belittle other people's homes.
Unless you live here and then you see the humour.

Too often Vancouver and it's people come across as the snooty bitch that thnks she''s better than everyone elose because she was blessed with good looks.
Vancouver is great because the people who were born here or immigrated here made it great. Asian, East Indian, European, whomever. The fact that Vancouver has playboy bunny looks is irrelevent.

Everyone that moves to the lower mainland seems to resent everyone that moves there after them. There seems to be a certain greed if you will, a "I have my patch of paradise and I don't want to share with anyone else" attitude. This is hardly exclusive to Vancouver, or even difficult to understand. But it is unpleasant to encounter.
If you say so.

...but itwould never be "home" and the above are a few of the reasons why.
Whether you find fault or praise for a given location. HOME is just that home.

Your thoughts
To all the people wanting to move here.

Don't !!!

You'll just increase our real estate prices, pollution, trafic, property taxes, etc etc etc...

You can come here to support our 2010 winter olympics. :D

Mr. Unfriendly.

Oh well... that changes everything.

It's also not a bad thing they have this opinion... rather look on it as opportunity.

They meet you and suddenly they have found someone who sparkles with infectious congeniality in comparison to everyone else.

I had the wonderful opportunity of spending some time in Vancouver last weekend with a friend and met some really great locals. We were welcomed by all, and had a great time... arriving home to several warm messages.
Are all VanItes freindly... probably not, but like PERB, why paint the good ones with the sins of the few bad apples.

hey kev

hey your dissing ms. luv here a.k.a hula girl.

me being half hawain,i think im really friendly
Leilani i'm sure as a Canadian your as friendly as can be, but living in Canada and being half Hawaiian isn't my definition of being Hawaiian.

I have spent over 2 years of my live in Hawaii and although i have i have met a few decent locals most are !@$#* pricks.

I'm pretty sure if i could transplant Hawaiians here i would find them a friendly bunch, but in Hawaii........ --- Kev

I haven't traveled throughout Canada, but people here in Vancouver are much friendlier than in any of the major cities in the States (I have been to most of them). In the big cities in the States, people are very suspicious and negative when someone says hello or asks for directions.

I have been here a bit more than a year and am amazed at how friendly strangers are to me. I definitely find it contagous and end up being friendlier in return.

I have traveled throughout the world and the only other place I have seen on 4 continents that compares in friendly locals is New Zealand.

State of confusion
I was talking to a guy who is from Montreal. He said that here in Vancouver if you're sitting alone at a table people will leave you alone, but back in Montreal if you're sitting alone, others will sit with you or invite you to join them. I had to agree. Vancouver might be less unfriendly than some places -- especially the USA -- but not as friendly as Montreal.

i lived in vancity all my life and just moved to toronto
i like van cause its my home town
but i also think vancity is WAY way too clique-e
lots of prissy people!
not so much in toronto alot more of every ethnic background
i find people here more laid back and open to diff things here
plus the fact that the fasion, music ect is much better an accessable out here! just my 2 cents!!!

Soooooooooo sorry, Jodie; I am forced to disagree.

I have just spent 5 of the longest years of my life in Toronto, and I KNOW whereof I speak. I realize that it may be different for you, having grown up there (remember YMMV!). They DO treat their own a little nicer - but you need to spend 20 years as an outsider to become accepted in their cliquey society (for what ever that's worth!).

Not only is T.O. filled with ugly (as in spiritual) people, it also has the worst (i.e. - lack of redeeming) architecture of any major city I know - and I've been in most of them in 5 continents.

Coming back home to "God's Country" feels SO good - and it really IS fun to bash the centre of the universe - they richly deserve it!

And no, that's not my .02 worth - it's worth $500,000 of pretax income!

The latest thread intro'ing Montreal into the mix (where I also lived for 7 years) reminds me of the one that goes:

"When Montrealers get to the end of the week; they say "thank God it's Friday"". When Torontonians get to the end of the weekend, they say "thank God it's Monday"".

That's a ROTFLMFAO in my opinion!

Can you say "get a life, kiddies?"
