So, I have about 4-5 email accounts with gmail, hotmail and yahoo. They are all normal accounts, except for 1 that I use exclusively for this hobby. I check my regular mail at work, but I guess out of habit/carelessness, I logged into the 1 hobby acct as well as my regular one.

Is there anyway that they could read what was in that account? I know if I used outlook, I'd be screwed, but with more "private" e-mail providers, could it still be read by the IT guys?

Now I'm freaking out. If it uses the https, does that make it any more difficult for an IT guy to view it?
If the network requires that your computer connects to a proxy server in order to get onto the network then they can look at the encrypted packets as you'll be making a secure connection to that server and it in turn will make a secure connection to the destination server. Giving them the possibility to look at the traffic going through.

Rule of thumb to live by. If you don't want your boss to know, don't do it on the company's computer. I suggest you get a smart phone and use that instead.

As has been stated, do not use your work computer for anything other than work. I do disagree with Dood to a certain extent. Some companies will allow you to go to sites, simply so that they can track policy violations and potentially use this data against you should the need arise. It is also not so much the IT department reading your stuff, agreed no time, however, here in Vancouver I have installed many different types of surf tracking, keystroke tracking, monitoring, proxies and video tracking software and hardware allowing my clients to track and monitor the usage of their computers. They can choose to monitor specific employees, groups or all staff. Other than blocking sites, they have chosen to have employees sign Internet usage policies and then monitor for violations. It is very easy to parse a log looking for keywords, sites visited, and then tracking such words to a specific workstation, date and time of day. They are not interested in reading your email, just interested in how much time you waste going to various email sites, social networking sites. any sites not considered politically correct (Porn and PERB) or any site that could potentially damage the Network.
As stated by others and myself, you have no expectations of any privacy on a company computer or while attached to a company Nertwork, so do not expect any and get yourself a smartphone, unless it is a company smart phone connected to the company WiFi.

There you go Mr. Boggo ,
hope you did not say anything about boning the bosses daughter.

now you should play more dumb than you are and do a big suck up of the bosses and the company and the IT dept.
send a email to a fake freind and say how you won the lottery and are not telling anyone and you are staying on the job becasue its such a great place to work.
see who comes sucking up to you at the watering hole and starts inviting you for drinks and hockey games.

It has been said already and I will understate it again. DO not use your work computer for anything but work.

I was employed by a company out of Toronto who were 'spying' on their employees. I suspected it and it was confirmed by another employee and a contractor who worked for them. I never used an email other than my company one on that computer ever again. If I felt the need to see my personal stuff, I would take my own laptop with me to work.

iPads, smartphones and other pda's took the need for using company assets for personal use out of the equation.

I usually don't check my hobby email. I didn't send anything, I just logged in and realized, holy crap, wrong e-mail account and logged right back out. If they did track it, would they now have access to log into my account? or would they have just seen what I saw?

I gotta start charging up my damned smartphone.
