I might be moving to Edmonton for a job. Curious to know what others think about this city. I know most vancouver people probably hate the place, but anyone living there or around have anything to tell me?

I have lived in the US, Vancouver and Edmonton.
I find Edmonton to be a wonderful place to live and work, however its not a place to visit as the option of things to do is limited in comparison to other citys.
We have many great SPs here, however be ready to spend 300 an hour sGFE, that's the industry standard here.

Move to Edmonton if you can make more money by working here, otherwise there is no real incentive to live here.
As a city its clean and crime is low compared to other places, I mean even the worst part of the city is pretty decent.

I grew in in Edmonton but have lived her for the last 20 years. Just some things I know about Edmonton. People seem friendlier. I think it is a prairie thing. They love their sports teams, good or bad. Summer can be hot though not as long as here. Spring comes later and fall earlier. Winters can be freakin cold but they got a lot more sun. If you're a young guy you'll find lots of your co-workers play sports. When I lived there all my firends played all sports. I never had a problem finding someone to play golf with or squash. Easy to get on a hockey or curling team. Tons of affortable golf courses all within a short drive. The river valley has a trail system that runs it's length on both sides of the river. Of course summer brings mosquitoes (can't have everything). They're usually only bad early evening or early morning. Depending on where you live and work your commute could be good or bad. The rush hours don't seem to last as long as here. Mostly because people can go in every direction. Not everyone works downtown.

One minus, it that you're at least a 4 hour drive from the mountains, either to Jasper or Banff. One the plus side, Banff and Jasper are both cheaper than Whistler to ski and stay at. Mostly because the winter months are off season. If you fish, there are a ton of lakes to fish at. Either trout fishing towards the mountains or lake fishing.

Of course everything Dood stated as well. I don't find the downtown all the attractive compared to Vancouver. A great Chinese restaurant just north of d/t called Lingnan is great.
WEM is of course where you take tourist. The water park in the winter is a great place to get away.

A big plus is the cost of living. No PST on anything. Only the GST. If the weather gets you down it's a quick flight to the coast or Vegas or Palm Springs. Flights can be cheap if your flexible. Maybe one negative will the if you rent. When my parents were renting the price went up every 6 months. You paid it because there was almost 0 vacancy rates.

Also some nice towns that surround Edmonton if you want the suburban lifestyle. St Albert is nice. Upper middle class and higher.

If you have any questions. I'll try to answer them for you. I go back there about twice a year as I have family and friends there.

Born and raised in Edmonton, I find it's a nice laid back city. Sure, there are rough patches, but every place has rougher areas. The people are generally friendly. It's not ever going to be confused with Vancouver in terms of things to do, so if you're looking for crazy night life, Edmonton isn't it.

Maybe it's because I don't know any better, but I'd love to move to a bigger city myself.

I have never lived in E-Town but have been there many times....and it can get damn cold in the winter. From what I know the massage parlours are very good....if you play golf then you are in luck as there are a good number of courses and the green fees are reasonable compared to Calgary.Real estate compared to Calgary is cheaper and compared to Vancouver it is a bargain.

I've lived in Edmonton my whole life. I pretty much agree with dood on everything he said, though I don't think the bad parts of town in Edmonton are any different than any other major city. If anything, the lack of gentrification works both ways, and so the seedy areas are not so bad. I lived in the Boyle Street area for a time, which is considered to be one of the worse parts of town, and it was fine. Just use common sense.

Edmonton is a major city, and so we pretty much have all the amenities of any other city in Canada. The difference between Edmonton and say, Vancouver, would be variety. For example, we only have one luxury clothing store (Holt Renfrew), two BMW dealerships, maybe two fine dining restaurants that could hold their own in the world-class category.

Edmonton is a better city to live in than to visit, as their are not many tourist attractions (ie., places that are so unique you wouldn't find them in other major cities). That being said, the air is clean, the commutes are usually pretty short, and the people are nice. I find over the long run that makes the most difference. Ask someone from Paris how much they go to the Eiffel Tower, or someone from London how much they go to Buckingham Palace. It's the day to day that means the most.

And the pooning's excellent too for a city of this size.

threepeat - you left out Henry Singer, a luxury clothing store for men. I shop there at least twice a year.

I've lived in Edmonton and area for most of my life. It's a nice enough city for its size, though not quite as urbane and sophisticated as Toronto, Vancouver or even Calgary. It's not a head office town like the aforementioned cities, but it still has a sizable white collar professional workforce, most of whom work for the provincial government, the post-secondary institutes, or the companies that contract with them.

I've had no issues living near downtown or near Old Strathcona across the river. Both areas are no more dangerous than other major urban downtowns - they all have their panhandlers, crazy street people and thugs. Just walk with confidence, don't look like a victim, and don't look at anyone the wrong way.

The people of Edmonton take their sports, arts and culture very seriously and passionately. It's like Montreal in that aspect.

Be sure you have a car to get around. The public transit system mostly sucks, and it's taking them decades to build the LRT to all corners of the city.

The pooning scene is quite good - you can find one or more top-notch SPs at the 40 or so MPs. There's about a dozen good independent SPs, and we get visiting SPs from Montreal, Vancouver and Calgary all the time. The downside is that the MPs have to close at 11 PM, and the city still needs reputable escort agencies (the few that are there are rip-offs).

I always advise E-town newbies to check out a message board called connect2edmonton. Lots of good info if you take the time to research it.
