Just listened to a story on the radio. (Note, I hope this post isn't disallowed, if so, feel free to delete it Mods).
Had a vice cop and a prostitution support worker.
Vice cop acknowledged full knowledge of what is going on in MP's (and said so on radio, how interesting!). Prostitution support worker said "folks are sexually exploited, there ought to be a course prior to a woman being allowed to work in industry".
Thought it was interesting. The vice cop was straight up realistic about it. Said men paying women for sex will never go away (wow, someone actually said the truth in the media. I AM SHOCKED!!!! ) and it's best to keep it off the streets, where women are safe (I wonder how many MP attendants have been killed in Edmonton over the same period as Willy Pickton doing his deeds? Anyone have any stats?) and things are controlled.
Sounds reasonable to me.
Prostitution support worker speaks of the vulnerable being exploited (as if they couldn't leave when they found out what the deal was, as if they have no minds of their own, as if they are children and not autonomous adults free to make decisions and decide their life come what may).
What I mainly heard was rational realism from the vice cop and paternalistic nanny statism from the prostitution support worker. I guess I shouldn't be surprised really, but hope springs eternal.
Personally, I'm not averse to an education campaign to those going into the business, full information is worthwhile. (Heck I wish there was the same thing for my profession. No one ever told me how shitty it can get. Bastards!!!!). However, it is a fruitless effort to try and stamp out prostitution because it ain't gonna happen.
A few reason follow:
1. Men always pay. Be it time, professions of love, marriage, money, gifts, emotional support, men always pay.
2. Women really do believe they are free to do with themselves as they will. Most aren't interested in prostitution, but some (and there will always be some) understand that they can make money off their bodies serving men's desires. No duh! It's kind of like a "wifely duty" but drop the wife part.
3. Efforts to stamp it out have never succeeded anywhere ever in history that I've ever heard of unless someone can point out the situation to me.
Uhhh, well, discuss... I guess. I've said my piece.
