I was caught going 71 km in a 60 km zone, the ticket is for $110, does that seem right.

I found a site that has the fines on it and up to 15 km over the limit is $89

Does any one know what 11 km over is worht?

Thanks

My first reaction was that seems right but the next two posts disagree. I thought the rates went up significantly a couple years ago. Is it possible you were going thru a construction zone and the fine was doubled?

It was on Gateway Blwd. and 71 Ave , I was on my way to timmies for a coffee, no construction, hardly any traffic, It was 7.30 PM, no ppl, no kids walking there,
There was a couple of other bike's stopped to, so maybe it was "pick on biker" night

You might want to consider seeing a JP to get it reduced or go to court and fight it.

I think the majority of cops won't give out a ticket unless it is 15 kmh and over, this one must have been desperate, are you sure he didn't tack on something else on there? If you have the time to go to court, I would say fight it or it would prolly cost you more, but you could hire one of those ticket fighter companies.

Went through Whitecourt many times when I was younger, but havn't been there in at least 10 years, there was always rcmp presence, but never thought they were speeding ticket happy like here in Edmonton.

I got nailed going 61km in a 50 zone one night and was fined $110. This was about 5 years ago. Knew I was busted when the flash went off. lol

Wow! My driving instructor told me(when I was still a L) that it's okay to go 8 over the limit but cops can give you a ticket if you are 9-10 over but most cops don't. Cops always go over the speed limit.

One time on Canada day I was heading home and there was a cop going over the speed limit so I started to catch up to him and I was going 63km in a 50 zone and still gave a a good distance between the cop and I.

Back in the early 90's, the RCMP majority of the time would not ticket you until you were 19 over on the major roads with exception of school zones.

Ah, but now a days, it often isn't RCMP doing the speed enforcement in Alberta. Provincial sheriffs do a lot & many (but not all) municipal peace officers have been given authority by the province's Solicitor General for speed enforcement on provincial highways within their municipal boundaries. As the sheriffs' job is primarily speed enforcement, they are not as lienient & the local robocops... Well, cash cow seems to be a fair idea of their motivation.
That means I can't get to Calgary in an hour and a half. :(

for that amount of money its not worth a fight.
This.

Speed limits exist for a reason...follow them and you won't get busted.

(That being said, I do my own fair share of speeding...and if I get caught, I'll probably shut up and pay it - it's my own damned fault.)

hey all. yeah i dont think its worth fighting sometimes. you have to figure out that it will take at least several hours of your time, at least, and thats if you win. is that time you spent less than the cost of the ticket?? more often than not its way more expensive to fight it than to just pay for it. if your license was at stake then thats a different story all together.

A few years ago I happened to get two photo radar tickets within 30 days of each other. I went into the Crown Prosecutor and he took $30 off of one and $39 off the second ticket. It made the trip worthwhile. I did admit my guilt but didn't get hit with the full amount of each one.

Go here: http://www.transportation.alberta.ca/556.htm. Open the document entitled "offences and penalties under the AB Traffic Safety Act". Go to page 7 to find the specified penalties for various speeds. Fines per Km increase as the speed increases and range from $57 for 1 Km over to $351 for 50 Km over. 11 Km over the limit should have had a specified penalty of $80. You can usually always go to court on your appearance date and plead guilty to a lesser fine. The courts are clogged to the max.

$69 (nice number :)) isn't a bad saving but if it takes much more than an hour of your time it's a wash.
