Hordes of Lower Mainland women will invite their boyfriends to see strippers this month, and they’ll pay twenty dollars at the door to do it. Since its beginnings in 2004, Exotic Dancers for Cancer has become a magnet for women, unlike anything seen in Vancouver strip clubs before.

The sex-positive event will be held Thursday, April 30th from 3 p.m. till 1 a.m. at the world-renowned Cecil Show Lounge on Granville Street.

The theme is “Believe” and guests will enjoy the sensual disrobing of fairies and other fantasy performers throughout the night.

“Exotic Dancers for Cancer brings people together,” says former entertainer, Trina Ricketts, who started the event six years ago in honour of an industry member and close friend who was dying of cancer.

“We’re all allies in our quest for healing – whether we’re strippers or housewives, or both.”

In past years, charities have declined donations from the group due to its controversial method of raising funds.

“Stripathon” is not a common fundraiser title for most mainstream organizations. However, Rethink Breast Cancer has been a willing recipient for the past three years.

“Most charities will accept our money anonymously, if we are willing,” says Ricketts.“But we want our supporters to know where their hard-earned dollars are going and we refuse to be shamed.”

She says Rethink Breast Cancer is a good fit for the event because of its focus on women under forty. This year funds will be shared between Rethink Breast Cancer and the orphaned children of a very young mother who died in November.

The Sixth Annual Exotic Dancers for Cancer will feature exotic entertainment, a silent auction, extraordinary pole demonstrations, burlesque performances, t-shirts, and more. Tickets are available for $15 in advance at the Flaming Angel Boutique, 644 Seymour Street or online at clubzone.com.

The Cecil Show Lounge was rated the second best club to work at in BC in 2008 by The Naked Truth dancers, an online community of exotic entertainers who contribute to the event’s coordination every year at www.nakedtruth.ca.

A sister event will be held on Sunday, May 24th at the Fox Pub in Victoria, also rated in the top three best places to work.Funds raised there will support the family of a toddler with leukemia who lives on the island and travels for treatments.

Rethink Breast Cancer is an innovative charity that reaches out to young people concerned about and affected by breast cancer. By taking a breakthrough approach to all aspects of breast cancer – medical research, support, public awareness and fundraising – Rethink Breast Cancer is expanding support for the cause. Rethink has brought together some of Canada’s leading scientists to develop a much needed research program focused on cultivating the talent of new young researchers.
