Balanced Consumerism and Practical Label Wearing

Derailing a thread is not to my liking. That VRZ thread and the sub-topic of designer labels piqued my interest.

Before I entered the adult business, I was a fashion-slave. I bought designer labels before I could buy furniture. :p My outside appearance and keeping up with other people's material objects was my focus.

When I became a companion, I respected the money. I didn't want to blow it all on designer fashions and lifestyle, then simply want more and more.

My choices for clothing and accessories are items bought with care, cost analysis and consideration. Designer items are in my closet and bathroom vanity, but not everything is labelriffic. I'm what the beauty department calls "non-synergistic". That's ok! I think for myself, I do not have to buy every single item a company or designer makes.

I am a practical consumer and I judiciously chose items based on their need, their practicality, and their style.

Renowned designers like Dior, Chanel, Louis Vuitton are all very wonderful, but I am a young, urban female. Offbeat labels like Diesel or Energie capture my eye. Independent adult businesses, like porn companies that make clothing and accessories, get my attention.

I'll wear a coat I bought at a going-out-of-business Asian shop, porn accessories, a Ralph Lauren shirt and dress pants from a 9-5 office girl shop. That is my personal style.

Personal style is something the visionary designers preach to their disciples, but not everybody gets it. Find what you like, twist it to your style, and make it your own. Just don't rip from others. Pay tribute as necessary, inspired by...

My style is completely individual and frugal, yet something about it works. Most people have wrongly assumed everything I wear is super-expensive. Some days, the assumption I am a cold-hearted clotheshorse is kinda hilarious. :)

Seeing the marketplace as all or nothing, black-and-white thinking, is goofy. Like only designers and Zellers exist. I like the full range of the market, including the middles and the margins.

Somehow I curved my excessive spending, to balanced consumerism. And I'm loving life.

Jerika... lol... right on missy ;) You'll make some guy veyr happy with your grade A style, without the A++ pricetag.

As rocky said, most guys kind of do this anyways. When we shop for clothes, I believe the standard test is:

1. Does it fit.
2. Do I look like a tool in it?
3. Will I actually wear it?
4. Can I affored this and still get my 42" TV?

Now, compare this to how most guys shop for cars:

1. Whoa! What's the HP on this? How fast will it go and still corner like a mofo?
2. How many chicks can I pick up with this car?
3. Will my banker lend me enough for this sweet ride?

That is totally how i shop, too. #2 is the one i focus the most one. I asked a female friend to help me change my look and everything she picked for me was rather pricey and made me look like a Backstreet Boys. She also suggested I get frosted tips. I was like "How 'bout NO?" I think that part of Fashion is function and affordability. If you can look good in clothes you can wear nearly everyday and at a good price, you are being quite stylish. :)

My algorithm:

1. Do I need it?
2. Is it beautiful/elegant/stylish and good quality? Does it match my personal style?
3. Does it fit my budget? If it doesn't, is it unique and practical enough to justify a purchase - i.e. is it something I will wear 10 years from now and be happy with?
4. Does it fit well and do I look good in it?
5. Will it go with other things I wear to enable me keep my wardrobe small?

Brand names don't even enter the process. I also think not enough people bother with the first crucial question.

Oh, I meant "curbed my excessive spending," not "curved".

Since when is Diesel an "offbeat" label? You can buy it at Holt for peat's sake.

This post just mystifies me. Sorry, good for you for figuring out what most of us figured out when our parents stopped supporting us.

This thread was created for females who experience similar behaviours. Or for males, if it applies. Or for transgendered people, gay, lesbian,... anyone who benefits from other's experiences.

If you do not get decency from my thread, that prerogative is available.

I pair my $30 bohemian dress I bought on Melrose Blvd. with my $500 Burberry purse, I have a school backpack I've had for 10years, with my Burberry wallet tucked inside.

I go to school full time, just bought 2 t-shirts and a sweater at Zara a couple weeks ago. On sale. First time I've shopped since July.

When I first started the biz, I didn't go to school. I splurged a whole bunch at Holt's and went on many vacations. Now, I pay for school and can barely make time to work.

One of my favorite sweaters I always get compliments on I bought at Costco.

Half the clothes I splurged on 2 years ago I'm now giving away to charity because they are impractical for school and too high maintenance for me. The zillions of heels I have are sitting in my closet while my Uggs, kicks and ballet flats are the only thing getting any use out of the whole lot.

I'm sick of shopping. I say that because I'm now packing to move to a different place and HATE PACKING :(. Minimalist life for me til I buy my place!!!

Could be just me, but I could not give a rat's ass about labels & fashion.
Clothes are clothes - as long as they cover you up (which is what clothes' primary purpose is, ya know) who cares who made them?

I can't believe wess said that. Anyway, I am going to Asia soon (backpacking to several countries). Do let me know where you can find these knock-offs. Will make nice gifts for some people. I personally don't care to load-up. I buy what I need, whenever I need. I tend not to load-up, just buy few items every month or two months.

Does that answer your question?

I wasn't really questioning why people buy expensive clothes, it's your money, spend it on whatever you want, I was just saying in my opinion, I could care less who made my clothes. They are just to cover me up and keep me warm, to be honest...

They will find you. Some of them can get pushy.

Oh and in thailand they have no fitting rooms. This girl told me to try on some pants just behind this rack. I had no choice.:D
