per 10,000 exposures
to an infected source
Blood Transfusion 9,000[27]
Childbirth 2,500[28]

Percutaneous needle stick 30[30]
Receptive anal intercourse* 50[31][32]
Insertive anal intercourse* 6.5[31][32]
Receptive penile-vaginal intercourse* 10[31][32][33]

Receptive oral intercourse*§ 1[32]
Insertive oral intercourse*§ 0.5[32]
* assuming no condom use

I found this on wikipedia and do you agree that on average only 5 males out of 10,000 would catch HIV if they had sex with a HIV positive female?

Hi brokebastard

I am not sure about all the odds that you have listed. Some odds I have seen are;

In our blood and bodily fluid exposure manual published by the BC Center for Disease Control they say that the risk to HIV from a percutaneous exposure (needlestick risk) is 0.3% (3 in 1000).

A recent publication in the Lancet looked at the heterosexual risk of HIV-1 infection per sexual act

In high income countries the risk per sex act was:

Female to male 4 per 10,000 (1 in 2500)
Male to female 8 per 10,000 (1 in 1250)

To answer your question 5 out of 10,000 does seem like a good starting point.

It can be really hard to work out your exact risk as there are so many factors that can affect your HIV risk. Some of these factors are;

Studies have shown that people are highly infectious in the first few months of being infected with HIV. Your chances of passing on an infection during this period would be much higher than for someone who is just in the chronic phase of HIV infection.

Having a sexually transmitted infection would also increase the risk especially if it was syphilis or herpes.

If the person is taking HIV medication the risk would probably be much lower.

As you can see there can be a lot of factors that change the odds and remember this is the odds for sex one time. The odds change more depending on how many times you are having sex.
