Hi milkchocolate
Sometimes when someone is first infected with HIV they will get something which is called a seroconversion illness. This happens 2-4 weeks after you get HIV and can feel like the flu. Fever, Rash, feeling tired etc. Here is a link for more information

These are general symptoms to a number of illnesses like the common cold and given how common the common cold can be in Canada (especially in the winter) the symptoms do not really tell you a lot about what you may have.
People can be very worried about these symptoms when they come into the clinic. I usually tell people not to focus on the symptoms but rather to use it as a reminder that you should get a HIV test.
The other time you could get noticeable symptoms would be when HIV causes AIDS. On average this takes 10 years to happen. AIDS symptoms can vary a great deal depending on what type of infection you have gotten because of your lowered immune system.
On average most people with HIV feel fine and would not know that something is wrong. A blood test is the only way to find out.
In BC all HIV blood testing is free and even if you go to your family doctor you have an option of not using your real name.
